Frequently Asked Questions
What do you do in drama class?
In our younger classes, we play lots of games and learn the foundations of theatre: including character, genre, speech skills and improvisation. We use our imagination A LOT and tell exciting stories. Students simultaneously develop public speaking skills, and confidence in their self expression.
Classes can include rehearsals of scenes, monologues and songs, scene writing, script work, games and character creation. We work with a combination of pre-published and newly-devised plays, as well as collaborating with local emerging artists.
Our Screens class also offers the opportunity to undertake exams with Trinity College, London: an internationally-accredited certification for actors and performers. These exams are offered twice per year and are graded by experts across the world, who provide tailored feedback about how students can continue to develop their communication, performance and presentation skills. Dramawerkz has offered these exams since 2012, with more than a dozen students undertaking them, and some students pursuing qualifications with us at the tertiary diploma level.
What are the benefits of studying drama?
Drama classes provide a fantastic creative outlet for young people. Theatre gives us permission to play, tell stories and be ourselves. It can also teach us about history, give us insight into the human condition, and help us see the world from a new perspective.
Alongside this, drama classes provide lots of transferrable skills. Students learn about communication and public speaking, anatomy, teamwork, critical thinking and research.
What should I bring/wear to class?
For all students, we recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes. Itβs always best to bring a water bottle too. Throughout the semester, students will be provided with scripts that they are expected to bring with them to each class. Our teen students are also asked to bring along a notebook and pen.
